Purpose of Test
To further flesh out the level of intelligence that SCP-939 are capable of. This will allow us to further combat them by further understanding them, maybe one day even training them in some way, though I find this unlikely.
Hypothesis
When given a situation where cooperation is ideal as proposed by evolutionary game theory (John Maynard Smith) that individuals will always cooperate to further their own evolutionary goals.
Test Procedures
The iron reinforced steel puzzle box will be introduced to the cell then bolted to the floor with steel bolts while SCP-939 are sedated. The box will be filled with a pound of meat standard with their regular feedings.
Two SCP-939 will be introduced and their activities observed, then upon conclusion the box removed and the data analyzed.
Observations
Test 1: HRT was briefed and the box was transferred to SCP-939 with only minor injuries when HRT Weapon Specialist Floyd was accidentally struck with the large box.
The first test used an iron puzzle box, and while the introduction of the box was successful, the SCP-939 instances showed confusion and ripped the lid off with ease. The SCP-939 were sedated and entry was made to retrieve the box. The box was being removed when an SCP-939 who was less sedated than it appeared nipped Dr. Lupa. The injury was minor and Dr. Lupa was treated with antibiotics and a bandage and returned to work within an hour.
Test 2:
The test was repeated with a more obvious button for the box, and the box was rebuilt with reinforced steel. Transport to SCP-939’s cc was again difficult but once the HRT were re-briefed, which was easy as it was the same members as the days prior, the tea commenced.
Box introduction was successful, staff exited and the gas shut off. Upon waking the SCP-939 were immediately interested and attempted to open the box the same as the day prior but were unsuccessful. One discovered the buttons and ripped off the cover of the button, discarding it when it was determined to be inedible.
The test was initially believed to have failed however the second instance discovered the other button. Upon pressing it, the SCP-939 paused, then the instance who had ripped off the button hurried to the other side and used its teeth to manipulate what remained of the button. Its tooth hit the trigger and the box opened, and the 939 began quickly eating. After letting them eat a moment the gas was turned back on.
Retrieval was difficult as the SCP-939 instances had to be pushed off but the box was retrieved with no further issues. The meat was left so that it could be used for SCP-939’s regular feeding.
Analysis
The SCP-939 after being given sufficient time to examine the box was able to cooperate and open the box. While the button pressing could have been a fluke otherwise, in this instance I believe the return to the button demonstrates a sort of eureka moment for the SCP-939 instances where they understood what to do. SCP-939 deliberately maneuvered itself to compensate for the damage it had done.
Conclusion
This is an immense success, in my opinion, while the damage to my leg is annoying. I believe this shows a great deal about the cooperative potential of the SCP-939. Not just that though their problem-solving skills.
In the future when I return to these puzzle boxes I will use beeps from the buttons to aid the SCP-939 in recognizing the buttons as suggested by the HRT.
I want to thank the HRT who assisted me in transporting the puzzle box, and apologize for the injury they incurred doing so. As well for their assistance in the test, and carrying me back after I began falling unconscious from the SCP-939 bite.
